The good news, for the tree, is that in many cases the damaged tree can be saved and remain viable even after pretty severe damage. As long as roughly half of the branches and leaves remain and the tree is generally healthy and did not suffer any major structural damage the tree will usually recover just fine assuming they are no longer at risk of being a hazard to you or your property.
Some trees either aren't worth saving or simply can not be saved after substantial damage. Perhaps the tree was already diseased, has lost more than half of its crown or is suffering from a split trunk where it will not survive and must be taken down to avoid more issues. Although many people see repairing tree damage as a waste of money, ignoring damaged trees can and often do, lead to much more major expenses later on. Trees that are too close to building can cause major damage and should be addressed before they become a serious, expensive and potentially dangerous problem.
